"As Christians, we are to take responsibility for the irresponsibility of others." - Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle

Okay, so I know this isn't a passage from the Bible, but I liked the quote anyway. It was used in Peppermint-filled Pinatas, which my growth group is reading this semester. The quote is used in the context of a couple who were debating on whether or not they should adopt. They knew there were many challenges facing them should they choose to adopt. However, after hearing Mark Driscoll speak and say those words, they knew that adoption was the right path. The larger chapter that the story is from talks about not forgetting "the forgotten" or "the untouchables." Those people are just like us, even if you don't think so. At some point in our lives, we've all been outcasts and yet God has not forgotten us, so nor should we forgot the homeless, the drug addicts, etc. because we were not forgotten. Instead of turning away, we should reach out and help them in ways that they need to be helped. Someone has to care for other people. Why not you?

hm... to me, that quote isn't saying what he was meaning. when i first read it i was like "uhm... no, i'm not going to be responsible for other's mistakes. i can only control myself and my actions, not anyone else's." by helping others i don't see that as taking responsibility for. i see that as caring for their others and helping them. we are each our own person and although we can directly affect others choices, we can't make the choices for them.
